My April “Taking a Hike” column was published in The Hour on Thursday (Hiking Connecticut’s Bear Mountain). It is about a “spring” hike in the company of Bert Schwarz, a fellow-member of the Appalachian Mountain Club. [Edit: as of today, May 5th, it is also available on the Hersam Acorn Arts & Leisure site – Lion’s Head to Bear Mountain on a cold spring day.]

I climbed Bear Mountain at about the same time last year. Then, it really did feel like spring (see Paradise Lane). Compare the same view north from Lions Head from the two hikes in the photos.

This year the story was about ice, snow, driving rain, and the folly of cotton layers. I really hope that this will be the last column for at least eight months to mention wintery conditions.

January’s column was certainly wintery. If you are suffering nostalgia for cold, the column is now available in full from the Taking a Hike tab (2014: “Jan – Winter Hiking”) or by clicking here.
